Spencer Waguespack: Building Reliable Robots One Circuit at a Time
Spencer Waguespack, or "the longest-standing employee at Slip Robotics," has seen it all. From the early days when Slip Robotics was just a small group of visionaries, Spencer has been at the forefront of every electronic innovation the company has introduced. Whether it’s designing circuit boards or tweaking firmware to prevent robots from overheating mid-operation, Spencer’s the guy who’s got it covered.
On any given day, Spencer can be found sipping coffee and diving into hardware design, tackling new challenges before most people have even started their day. Right now, he’s focused on Architecture 3, an exciting project designed to enhance the performance of Slip’s robots. His goal? To fine-tune the motors and optimize overall system efficiency. Spencer’s work ensures that each new version of the robot is even more reliable and ready to handle whatever comes its way—keeping Slip Robotics at the forefront of innovation.
Spencer’s early years at Slip were filled with memorable moments that highlight the team’s ingenuity. One that stands out? The day the team fine-tuned the braking system for the robots. "We got a call from the field engineers saying, 'Hey, your robots are moving around in the truck.' Sure enough, they were," Spencer recalls with a laugh. It was a pivotal moment, not because everything went perfectly, but because the team quickly came together to develop the reliable braking system Slip still uses today. It’s a testament to their creativity and collaboration—taking a challenge and turning it into a lasting success.
What really excites Spencer is the opportunity to keep tinkering, improving, and, in his own words, “squeezing as much fat out of that bill of materials” as possible. Whether it’s reducing power consumption on the tiniest of components or finding new ways to make Slip's robots more reliable, he’s all in. He’s looking forward to being involved in more big, scary, and exciting projects—the kind that remind him that not everything is as producible as it looks on paper.
Outside of work, Spencer’s life revolves around movement—lots of it. Lifting weights, mountain biking, swimming, and occasionally contemplating signing up for another triathlon (but don't hold him to that). His love of pizza and wings is the only thing standing in the way of another race medal, which, given his past in competitive swimming, isn't too surprising. He may have made it to nationals during his college swim days, but he's quick to downplay it: "I'm slow now."
In his free time, when he’s not hitting the gym or the trails, you’ll find Spencer diving into YouTube tutorials on obscure electrical engineering topics. He loves staying up to date on the latest developments in his field—because even after a day filled with circuits and soldering, the learning never stops.
As Slip Robotics continues to grow, so does Spencer’s role in shaping its future, one piece of hardware at a time. Whether he's perfecting robot reliability or thinking up ways to keep the robot cool, he's excited for what's next. If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s that Spencer will be right in the thick of it, building solutions, fixing problems, and probably eating some pizza along the way.
